Chairman's Message
Shurer Dhara is a school of music modelled after Rabindranath Tagore’s thoughts and successful experiment in education that placed as much importance on intellect as on aesthetics. The community music school was founded in 1993 in Lalmatia, Dhaka by Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, an accomplished exponent of Rabindra Sangeet (Music of Tagore) who is a distinguished alumna of Visva-Bharati, the renowned Indian university in Santiniketan founded by Tagore. She is also a senior member of the Faculty of Music and Drama, University of Dhaka. Bannya was inspired by her guru, Sreemati Kanika Bandopadhaye, a direct disciple of Tagore, to open a school in Bangladesh to continue the tradition of Santiniketan. Over the years, Shurer Dhara established itself as a premier music school with an increasing number of children being enrolled. Shurer Dhara’s extended social remit now is to apply Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy of education in preparing the younger generation to become thoughtful citizens. While the world ought to fill the gap in human capital needs by specific skills, there is acute shortage of individuals with the breadth of knowledge and perception to attain wholeness as human beings and consensual leadership behavior. So, they are taught other subjects related to arts, culture and social studies. Shurer Dhara has gained a unique position in arts education providing structured courses to students of all ages, i.e., children, adolescents, young and adults. Shurer Dhara has attracted and retained qualified and dedicated faculty members. Many of the alumni stay on as teachers after completing their five-year certificate course.
